To me and to many Swiss, it is a different language and we get angry when Germans don’t respect that. We learn High-German in school, but at home and with friends we always speak Swiss. So High-German always feels like a foreign language. And it is normal that you prefer to talk in yout maternal tongue, isn’t it? Personally I even prefer to talk in English than High-German (but that’s an extreme case). It is a matter of perspective whether Swiss-German is a separate language or not. I think yes, because the difference between Swiss-german and German is substantial enough so people that only speak German have difficulty understanding Swiss. The difference between Swiss and German is similar to Spanish and Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan and nobody says those are not languages.
