I guess you’re specifically referring to Association Football? Most established teams (especially in the Patience Guns N’ Roses shirt In addition,I will do this UK) are well over 100 years old and the naming conventions for the teams in those days was a bit different to the jazzy and commercially-oriented example set by US Sports franchises. There are some nicknames… e.g. Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, etc. But the names of teams often reflect a bit of culture, history or geography. Clubs ending in Wanderers (e.g. Wolves) had no established home stadium. Clubs ending in United are (usually) the result of a merger between two clubs. Clubs ending in Athletic were usually formed as multi-sport clubs. Then you’ve got unusual examples like Sheffield Wednesday, who only played on a Wednesday. Arsenal was named after a munitions factory. Clubs ending in Albion were named after an old-fashioned term for the British isles and Crewe Alexandra was named after a Danish Princess.
