Of course. Many people get a lot of pleasure from their domesticated rats. They are quite intelligent as small pets go, more intelligent than hamsters or guinea pigs. They can live entirely on human food, so long as the human has a healthy diet. But don’t overdo the protein (bad for their kidneys) and sugar (bad for their skin), and remember that they don’t actually need vitamin C, so they only like fruit if it’s very ripe. And if they’re not wearing their teeth down on hard grain, make sure they have plenty of wooden toys and bones to gnaw. Rats can eat anything a human or a dog could eat and quite a few things we couldn’t, such as soap, leather and wax. I’m not aware of anything they *mustn’t* eat, aside from things which are obviously toxic. Don’t let them near anything containing lead, such as old pipes or paint, as it tastes sweet to them and they will eat it and die.
There are however things they should eat only in moderation. Their kidneys are very delicate, so they mustn’t have too much protein. Meat and nuts should be an occasional treat, not a regular staple. Because their teeth are constantly growing you don’t have to worry about dental decay, but too much sugar and fat can affect their coat quality and make their skin itchy.
